Grown-ups don’t look like grown-ups on the inside either. Outside, they’re big and thoughtless and they always know what they’re doing. Inside, they look just like they always have. Like they did when they were your age. Truth is, there aren’t any grown-ups. Not one, in the whole wide world.

If I write a piece and it has to do with my walking from the living room to the kitchen and some funny things happen, the same funny things will happen every time. Those are my chords. On the way, I may do some different things, but I’m not forgetting where the chords are and I always hit them. I may change things, but the song is the same. The improvisation is always within that, and the timing is always different. You can’t sit there and watch Bill Cosby — I don’t care how many times you’ve seen the piece, unless it’s “Noah” or “The Dentist” — and beat me to the punch line. Because I’m not going there yet. It may take me two minutes, three minutes or 15 minutes in that piece to get to the kitchen. But the song is the same.

No human being, when you understand his desires, is worthless. No one’s life is nothing. Even the most evil of men and women, if you understand their hearts, had some generous act that redeems them, at least a little, from their sins.

Social game developers are scrambling knee-over-shoulder over one another, as of late, to implement The Next Energy. Concepts like Social Game Energy Points — much like Viral Marketing, masturbation, and caffeine — are the sort of thing that works for a while, until its flimsy veneer snaps off and the user blinks, and says, “Wait, what?” It’s a compulsion trap.

This is the first serious long-term plan I’ve ever had. I figure, Shit, I’m a guy with long term plans now? I need to re-roll my character sheet. I start with appearance (self-aware poser), and ramp up the mathematical angle, to cobble together a philosophy of punk rock mathematics. It is this:1) People use the average Joe’s poor mathematics as a way to control, exploit, and numerically fuck him over.2) Mathematics is the subject in which, regardless of what the authorities tell you is true, you can verify every last iota of truth, with a minimum of equipment. Therefore, if you are concerned with the empowerment of everyday people, and you believe that it’s probably a good idea to be skeptical of authority you could do worse than to develop your skills at being able to talk math in such a way that anyone can ask questions, can express curiosity, can imagine applying it in the most weird-ass off-the-wall ways possible.

Since businesses are obliged by zoning restrictions to locate far away from residential areas, most Americans drive to every store they visit. This means that store visits are often discrete trips that must be undertaken consciously and planned out ahead of time. As a consequence, shoppers will want to visit stores that carry the most diverse inventory—Wal-Mart, Costco, et al.—and avoid shops that specialize in one particular kind of good—the local paint store or flower shop, for instance.

In eras past, mainstream culture was blandly, blindly complacent, so underground music was angry and dissatisfied. But now, mainstream culture isn’t complacent, it’s stupid and angry; underground culture reacts by becoming smarter, more serene. That’s not wimpy—it’s powerful and productive.

songparts: The Uncoppable Lick (From “You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon) Strange coincidence: at least three people lived a significant portion of their adolecence with Paul Simon’s Graceland wedged inextricably in the family car’s cassette deck: Graham Clark Becky Johnson Scott Simpson They know these two measures all too well. From The Fretless Bass: Three minutes and forty-four seconds into Graceland’s sixth cut is a two-bar bass break that has confounded as many bassists as it has inspired. “That was my idea,” says Bakithi of the wildly descending lick in the first bar. “We were recording that song on my birthday, and there was a space to fill, so Paul said, ‘Go ahead Bakithi. Do what you like.’ I just played—and they loved it. It was one take. Listening back, I didn’t know what happened; I thought it was from God, you know? I never planned it.’ Now for the tricky part: the second bar of the solo is actually the first part played backwards. Engineer Roy Halee simply flipped the tape over and spliced the two parts together. “People have tried to cop those licks,” shrugs Simon, “but it’s physically impossible.” So the next time your band covers “You Can Call Me Al,” forget about trying to duplicate Bakithi’s mutant solo and take a tip from Paul: just do what you like. If you are a child or a cretin, it’s possible that you may never have seen the song’s video, a testament to understated delight. Price: $.06

For Dr. Mom, who was never a sisty ugler. For those of you without a clue as to what this is, it’s Jack Ross, doing his rendition of Cinderella. It was a hit around 1962. On the other side of the 45 was his song called Margarita. My sister and I used to listen to Cinderella on her little red record player and laugh ourselves silly. Apparently, it’s still funny in digital format.

One of the reasons kids get bored by science is that too many teachers present it as a fusty collection of facts for memorization. This is precisely wrong. Science isn’t about facts. It’s about the quest for facts – the scientific method, the process by which we hash through confusing thickets of ignorance. It’s dynamic, argumentative, collaborative, competitive, filled with flashes of crazy excitement and hours of drudgework, and driven by ego: Our desire to be the one who figures it out, at least for now. It’s dramatic and nutty and fun.
